Above Sea Level | Butterfly Squid & Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp

I’ve seen it in other places before, some kind of fried-looking thing, hanging on sticks with what looks like legs sticking out, they looked like huge spiders. *shivers*

“Super” sized Butterfly Squid

That’s just my wild imagination, though. This is actually called a Butterfly Squid. No, it’s not some kind of a mutant, but just deep-fried squid with breading, sliced in a way as if it’s spreading wings like a butterfly. It was made famous by Above Sea Level, which is apparently the first seafood fast food restaurant in the country, according to an article that I’ve read. The restaurant quickly became famous and they’d recently opened a branch at Vista Mall, Malolos.

I don’t know about the “fast food” thing, though, but I think the waiting time of about 25 minutes for just two dishes- drinks not included- doesn’t live up to that. But despite the kind-of long wait, it was easy to let it go because the food was actually delicious. They provide plastic gloves so you can easily strip those “wings” off of the Butterfly Squid and just eat it all up with ease. It’s available in four different sizes labeled as Giant, Super, King, and Groot.

Bacon wrapped Shrimp

We could all agree this Bacon-wrapped Shrimp dish is calling for cholesterol overload and your hearts could most likely despise it. But it’s not the heart that welcomes the food but the mouth, so who cares, right? I mean, just look at how those bacon strips are beautifully embracing the shrimps and stabbed with toothpicks so they never get separated ever again. That’s true love right there, and you’d feel it the moment it hits your palate. Made me breathe heavily just seeing it when the waiter finally put it on my table. If you have cholesterol problems, you might start to breathe heavily after eating it, too. But when was the last time you had your YOLO moment?

Above Sea Level restaurant also has Firecracker Shrimp in their menu. I haven’t tried it, but I’m guessing it’s supposed to blow up your mouth. Then, there’s also Squid Fries, because French Fries is too mainstream. It’s one of the platter meals that they serve that are good for 2-3 persons. That’s all I have about this seafood restaurant. You can find out more about them by visiting their Facebook page.
